In a few short sentences, you start your game producer career in an old garage. You hire people to help you on your adventure. On my first try I went bankrupt and on my second try I became a millionaire so the game is easy to learn. You just need to check and use every feature you see.
The core gameplay is fun and satisfying, but in my opinion, some changes and additions should be applied to make the game more realistic and even more fun. I don’t want to be misunderstood, I don’t think a game should be %100 realistic. But as this game is about running a company, I look for a bit more reality. I really want to feel that ambiance! “Graphics” is not really important for me in such a game, “gameplay” is the most important. I would play even text-based if I liked “game depth” and “functions”. A game like this should target “core-gamers”, not “casual-gamers”. You will soon understand why I put these words in quotes.
Well, let’s take a quick look at Mad Games Tycoon’s features.
I skip character and company creation part. As soon as you start the game you need to create your development room and start the action. I am not going to talk about decoration of your office because, unfortunately, this feature is just basic, you just put what your employees need and that is all. You can’t decorate how you like, there are not so many choices, you can’t even turn the objects.
Don’t miss contract businesses. At my first steps I tried to get every contract business I found, these contract businesses help a lot when you have just begun.
Hiring employees is a must. You need employees to complete tasks faster, you need employees to be able to do more tasks, you need employees for different departments but be careful about their salaries and balancing your income and expenses. If you are in debt at the end of the year, you go bankrupt. Game over!
Can you tell what is the most fun thing to do in a game producer tycoon game? Producing games! Naturally the most potential and usual thing to do in a game focused on producing games! But what are the details? What makes Mad Games Tycoon special?
Well, you choose a name, genre (you unlock sub-genre feature when you progress a bit or you need to start with a specific country to be able to use this feature from the beginning), topic, and engine for your game. At first you can produce just retail games, but after you make some progress you are able to produce MMO games as well. You can also buy a movie license for your game to make it more appealing. After you are finished making your game you pick a publisher company. These are all known companies whose names are different with a letter or so! You can publish your own game, but not in the early stage of your career.
While picking features of your game there is something you need to be careful about. You need to focus on trend genre & topic combination. This is shown at the right upper corner of the screen. The game provides you with different combinations of genres and topics with different periods of time. Some combinations last longer than the others; as far as I have seen this is completely random. If you produce a trendy game combination at the right time, you are awarded nicely by your fans.
Focusing on trend genre & topic combination is important, of course, but this is not the only important feature in Mad Games Tycoon. You also need to buy movie licenses to sell more! A “Jack Bond 007: A Bad View” license for your espionage game, for instance. Or you can buy “Majority Report” for your sci-fi game! Maybe you should try the movie “Warluck” for your “Orcs” or “Dungeons” themed game?
Training your employees is vital, they gain experience points completing tasks, but training is the real deal if you really want your employees to be more effective at given tasks. Do I need to tell they demand more salary when they are trained? Of course, they do just like in the real world so be careful about your investment in your employees. For example, don’t give them graphics or sound effects course, if you plan to keep them in customer service department that you need to keep your fans happy.
In fact, this is something critical developers should really take a look at, people can’t be perfectly effective at all skill branches given in this game. Certain skill trains should be blocked for certain employees, this way players will find a way to learn how to choose and organize their staff, give them more proper tasks instead of blindly training them until %100 at all skills and giving them a job in the customer service department for 7000 USD / month! I had enough money to do this, but this is very boring and not very realistic.
Hold shares! I noticed this in the last stages of the game so I am not sure when this feature becomes available and how it can help at earlier stages. I however, can say that it didn’t help me too much when my balance had 7 figures.
Don’t ever forget that you are in a competition with all other companies in the market, you need to plan your steps carefully if you don’t want to stay behind!

Mad Games Tycoon has you forming your own game studio in the early 1980s (or later if you so desire), beginning from the comfort of your garage. Therefore, you should dust off your DeLorean and ready your engines because you are about to go back to the future.
Likely, if you are reading this article there’s a good chance you enjoy playing video games. Thus the genre of simulation games shouldn’t be something you’re unfamiliar with. That being said, inside a video game, managing your own game tycoon might be something you’re not accustomed to. I’ve always loved the “managing your own game studio” niche of games in the simulation genre, so I was already familiar with the concept. Especially, considering my experience with the original release of the game on Steam. However, if you aren’t as experienced with this particular subsection of gaming, the in-game tutorial does a great job of easing you into all of the title’s mechanics.
When it comes down to simulation games, mechanics and features are really important… Fortunately, this particular game is packed full of them! That being said, the game also costs significantly more on Nintendo Switch than its Steam counterpart. The game retails for $39.99 on the Nintendo Eshop and $14.99 on Steam. Despite the mark-up for the Nintendo Switch version of the game, there is still enough content to warrant the asking price. However, it would’ve been considerate of them to at least make some graphical improvements, to compensate. The game’s current graphical state is both uninspired and not indicative of the Nintendo Switch’s hardware capabilities. Additionally, the user interface is cluttered, even if it is usable.
In terms of content, the gameplay experience will be drastically different depending on what year you decide to form your own game studio. You can choose to establish your video game tycoon in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, or even in 2010. No matter when you decide to begin your adventure into the tycoon management business, you are bound to experience a different outcome – as time advances in-game, so will the research opportunities available.
After you’ve chosen when you want to form your game studio, you have to decide on a company name and logo. Surprisingly, there’s a decent amount of logos available – ranging from simple clipart to parodies of real-life game companies. My only issue with creating a game company was in regards to the naming process. If you choose a name that is really long, it will appear cut off on the user interface in-game. Once you’ve finished creating your company, you need to create your character.
Unfortunately, though, character creation is about as barebones as it gets; the only things making your individual character standout are their skills and gender. You can’t alter their clothing, hair color, facial structure, etc. Despite the inadequate character customization, being able to choose the skills (e.g. you can specialize in RPGs and virtual reality) that your character excels at is a smart inclusion.

The next act of business, once you’ve created a character, is to start turning your garage into the perfect workspace (well… as perfect as possible for a small sooty space). There’s enough in-game furniture to help you accomplish this task, but don’t expect anything alluring; it gets the job done and that is it. That being said, it isn’t too much of an annoyance, because the developers allocated most of their effort into adding more gameplay functions. This is done through the inclusion of rooms. Rather than each furniture having a function, the type of each room defines how you interact with the space. Despite how concerning that might sound to those familiar with the simulation genre, it is the most suitable approach for a game like this. There is a good variety of room types too – and each of them serves their own purpose. In Mad Games Tycoon, you are given a lot of choices in how you choose to operate your business. You can develop your own game, distribute games, build your own game console, or construct a game engine; the possibilities really are limitless!

If you find out your game isn’t doing as good as it could be doing, you can ask your developers to create a report detailing exactly what went wrong, so it can be fixed going forward. However, if your title is doing exceptionally well you should invest some money into the annual game convention that takes place each year in-game. This event is a good place to show games and consoles you are working on, as well as earn fans. It’s important to keep those fans happy, though, using the customer support room that can be built.
Despite the subpar graphics and lack of character customization, Mad Games Tycoon creates an addicting gameplay loop that fans of the simulation genre will love. Just be mindful of which platform you are buying the game on and at what price… because the game is cheaper elsewhere. That being said, if you enjoy simulation video games and can only get it on Nintendo Switch, it is still worth the asking price.
